Ethically Dyed Wedding Dresses for the Alternative Bride
Moving to the countryside has helped me to know myself better and to become more curious to start trying new things. One of the things I tried a few times was plant dyeing. I fell in love with the process. It’s so simple yet so intense and personal and perfectly imperfect.
When I heard about MiaSylvia, who is crazy enough to create a completely different niche of wedding dresses for alternative brides, I was beyond excited. I had to ask her why.
MiaSylvia Bespoke is a designer. She creates ethical bridal wear for the eco-conscious bride. Handmade in the UK from sustainable pigments and re purposed textiles. She creates each of the dresses for the most important person in the world – YOU.
Here’s a short interview from a series of interviews with people we admire, we love and recommend and we learn from! Hope this inspired you in any way!
1. What’s the STORY behind this business?
A fairer, cleaner, greener and more ethical choice for all your textile and Bridal needs. Everything is either hand-made, up-cycled or hand dyed in small batches using natural pigments I have foraged by hand.
2. What does ETHICAL living mean to you?
Ethical living is such a big topic which is close to my heart and the core of what I do. Knowing where your clothes and textiles are from, who made them and having complete transparency should be essential to every business.
3. Why do you think brides should consider a more ETHICAL WEDDING dress option?
The fast fashion industry is a scary one. The Bridal gown industry is even scarier. We all want to feel incredible on our wedding day and I understand that the ideal dress will make you feel amazing. How much more amazing would it feel knowing that your dress doesn’t have a history of poorly treated staff, unethical production and non-sustainable fabrics. It’s the one garment you can be almost certain people will only wear once. That why I think is really important to re-visit, re-invent and re-love pieces and fabrics that are screaming to be worn again! And that’s where I come in to add that lil’ touch of magic.
4. Could you explain the PROCESS in creating an ethical dress?
Every single dress is 100% unique to the next. Whether it be a vintage gem hiding in an attic, a dress passed down generations that needs some loving or even a dress thrifted from a charity shop I envision the process of the dress with the brides. Sometimes they’ll share their colour pallets and florals so that I can echo these into the garment and other times I am left to my own devises as to what I personally think the dress needs (colour wise).
5. What’s your no.1 CONSIDERATION when designing the garments?
The fabric. Depending on the garment, some have a multitude of layers and fabrics and others are simpler. Knowing the fabrics gives me a clear indicator as to how strong/weak a colour I can produce.
6. Wedding dresses are usually One Wear GARMENTS. Can MiaSylvia wedding dresses be customised / styled so they can be worn again and again?
Of course! The goal is to make this dress something so spectacular that it would be a shame to leave it in a dark cupboard. Let’s re-imagine and invent the way we look at tradition and create something beautiful that can evolve over time together.
7. You create NATURALLY DYED wedding dresses, something so different from the traditional wedding dress. What’s the bride who wears them, like?
All brides are so different to the next and I think a bride that is looking for some colour is someone who dares to be bold, different and wants to break away from the traditional white.
8. What’s the VISION for MiaSylvia?
I’m currently planning to open a studio/ shop that I can run workshops, trunk shows and open studio days from.
9. What makes your HEART beat faster?
Natural dyes, large fabric instillations and embroidery!!!
If you’re looking for an ethical wedding dress handmade in the UK, using natural dyes, first of all, this is possible! Secondly, check MiaSilvia, a designer we’ll definitely keep an eye on!
